Just like with parenting, if a caregiver takes away everything a minor gains positive reinforcement from in life, a general attitude of rebellion and acting out is fostered as the individual has nothing left to lose. Protective factors which may curtail destructive behavior are often invaluable to understand the degree or range of a problem and offer insight to what measures may smooth edges. Very often, even the employee finds her/himself surprised by the answer vocalized when asked about future plans and how they wish to be thought of and remembered.
Are the future plans of the employee reachable? Do they have any incentive such as a pension or retirement which may circumscribe behavior? Also, what is the view towards corrective feedback and interpersonal coaching?A past history of suicidal/homicidal ideation, interpersonal difficulties, occupational complications, past non-violent interactions, and past resistance to follow direction are also elements for consideration.
Difficulties in relationships may erode away hope, purpose, and contribute to reactivity. Also, this may highlight past cyclical patterns of interpersonal behavior which may be of importance for conceptualization.
Physical harm to victims, use of weapons, minimization, and a mindset which may justify behaviors will typically prove to be useful for consideration. Lastly, it is always important to think about the concentration of even small transgressions. Very often internal and external customers describe surprise, but upon review small infringements which are increasing in frequency usually bely a looming difficulty.
